Objectives

- Improve linguistic skills and knowledge to perfect the comprehension of the foreign language.
- Expand civilisational knowledge of the countries studied (in relation to a foreign language) and learn to use appropriate critical methods.
- Gain a broad general and literary knowledge and mastering the methodological tools to properly analyse any documents and works (historical and literary texts, paintings and photographs).
- Comprehend translation using accurate methodological tools.
- Improve your speaking and writing skills.
The aim of this course is to train students to become experts in the English, Spanish or Chinese language and culture, by developing a solid theoretical and practical background.
Skills
- Understand a speech or a discussion in a foreign language at a normal speed, in live conditions or in the media.
- Understand any type of texts, even abstract ones.
- Participate effortlessly in an everyday conversation, making an oral presentation and demonstrating your ability to qualify and argue for your opinion.
- Build a presentation or a paper (letter, article, report, essay, dissertation) in a clear and organized manner.
- Interpret phonological and grammatical characteristics of the language studied.
- Comprehend how to methodologically analyse and comment on historical or literary texts or audio-visual materials.
- Translate precisely from French to foreign language studied and vice-versa.
- Acknowledge and understand the modern societies and political, social and cultural systems of the countries whose language is studied.
International dimension
- During their studies, students will have the opportunity to study abroad through the partnerships of Artois University, including exchange programs such as Erasmus+ or other exchange agreements signed and authorised between the Artois University and its foreign partners.

Additional information
- Students work in small groups so that the teachers can give personalised feedback and better support. The supervising teacher regularly gets in touch to check on the students' progression. During their first year, students focus on learning the basics. In their second year, they have to choose a subprogram.
- An internship is mandatory for third-year students, and optional for second-years, so that the students can be efficiently prepared to enter the professional world.
- The course is taught by university lecturers and researchers, along with external professionals in partnership with the university, such as local authorities, businesses, associations or public agencies.
- Students have the opportunity to study abroad for one semester up to one year through various exchange programs and partnerships or dual degrees.
- For the third-year (L3) students in the English or Spanish course, the content of the course is shaped so that they can take the new teaching exam for L3 in the best conditions.

Program
Students must choose a language to specialise in. The choices are between English, Spanish and Chinese.
From the first semester to the sixth one, the core classes are structured around two axes:
- ‘Language’: linguistics, translation studies, phonology, oral and written expression.
- ‘Culture’: civilisation, literature, and general culture.
In their second year and in addition to the core course, students have to choose between two subprograms to prepare them for their future career:
- ‘Teaching and Research training’
- ‘Public sector and Civil service training’
In their third year, another option is offered to the students who are interested in teaching French or working in French-speaking cultural organisations abroad: ‘Teaching French as a Foreign language’ (FLE).

Further studies
- A Master’s degree in ‘Foreign and Regional Languages, Literatures and Civilisations’ specialty “CITIES: International Cultures, Events and Societies” in English, Spanish or German. This degree offers an original training and education based on lectures and seminars with the goal to improve knowledge in the disciplines of language, literature and civilisation. Practical classes are taught by professionals of information sciences and communication to develop students’ skills in scientific and cultural outreach. This course aims at preparing students for work opportunities as teacher or professor, and in culture and event management.
- The online Master’s degree in ‘Teaching Chinese as Foreign Language / Second Language’ is aimed at students wishing to teach Chinese in schools or in enterprises in France or in foreign countries. It aims at helping students acquire linguistic and pedagogical skills in teaching Chinese as a second language.
- A Master’s degree in ‘Teaching and Education’. This course can only be entered after passing a teaching entrance exam.
- After a Master’s degree in research, students can advance in their studies by joining a Doctorate or PHD program for three more years under the tutelage of a thesis supervisor. A doctorate is the highest academic degree.
